Is Hyrox hard?

Updated 9 October 2026 · 3 min read

Short answer: Hyrox is hard because it's long: 8 km of running plus eight stations, which takes most people one to two hours. But it isn't technical, and you can walk, rest and go at your own pace. If you can run 5 km without stopping and you train regularly, 8 to 12 weeks of specific preparation is enough to finish your first race in the Open division.

What makes it hard

What makes it doable

Are you ready?

You're in a good place to start a 12-week block if you can:

If not, spend four to eight weeks building those first, then start the 12-week Hyrox training plan.

First-race tips

  1. Run the first kilometre slower than you think you should.
  2. Try every station at race weight in training at least once, especially the sleds.
  3. Plan your wall-ball sets in advance, such as 10 × 10.
  4. Keep moving through the Roxzone; transitions count toward your time.
  5. Aim to finish strong, not to hit a time. Your first race sets the benchmark.

More questions

Can a beginner do Hyrox?

Yes, if you train regularly. The Open division is designed for everyday gym-goers, and many people walk parts of their first race. Give yourself 12 weeks, or longer if you can't yet run 5 km without stopping.

Can you walk during Hyrox?

Yes. You can walk any part of the runs and rest at stations. You still have to complete the full distance and every rep.

How long should I train for my first Hyrox?

8 to 12 weeks if you already train regularly and can run 5 km. 16 to 20 weeks if you're starting with little running or strength training.
