Hyrox vs CrossFit

Updated 9 October 2026 · 3 min read

Short answer: Hyrox is a single race with a fixed format you know in advance: 8 km of running split by eight simple functional stations. CrossFit is a training method of constantly varied workouts that includes Olympic lifting and gymnastics. Hyrox rewards running and strength endurance; CrossFit rewards broad skill and power. Choose Hyrox if you want one clear race goal that mixes lifting and running.

Which should you choose?

How the training differs

Hyrox training looks like hybrid training: two runs, two strength sessions and one station session a week, with the same race at the end of every block. The 12-week Hyrox training plan is an example. CrossFit training rotates through many movements and energy systems with less running and more skill work.

More questions

Is Hyrox harder than CrossFit?

They're hard in different ways. Hyrox is a long, steady effort of one to two hours for most people. CrossFit workouts are usually shorter and more intense, and demand more technical skill.

Can CrossFit athletes do well at Hyrox?

Usually on the stations. The 8 km of running is where most CrossFit athletes lose time, so adding two runs a week makes the biggest difference.

Do you need a CrossFit gym to train for Hyrox?

No. A regular gym with a rower, some kettlebells and floor space covers most of it. A sled and a SkiErg help, and there are substitutes if your gym has neither.
