Each side of the bar
Loads exactly 100 kg on a 20 kg bar
How to load a barbell
- Subtract the bar: 100 kg − 20 kg = 80 kg of plates.
- Halve it for each side: 40 kg per side.
- Load the biggest plates first: 25 + 15 = 40 kg.
Put the heaviest plates closest to you on the inside of the sleeve, and use collars. Standard competition plates follow a colour code: 25 kg red, 20 kg blue, 15 kg yellow, 10 kg green.

How much does an Olympic barbell weigh?
A men's Olympic bar weighs 20 kg (about 45 lb) and a women's bar 15 kg (about 35 lb). Gym training bars vary, so check the stamp on the sleeve.
What plates do I need for 100 kg?
On a 20 kg bar, one 25 kg and one 15 kg plate on each side. Without 15s, use 20 + 10 + 10.
Why can't I load my exact weight?
The smallest plates set the step size. With 1.25 kg plates the bar moves in 2.5 kg jumps; with 2.5 lb plates, in 5 lb jumps.
