Running after leg day: is it OK?
Short answer: yes. An easy, conversational run the day after leg day is fine, and many people find it eases stiffness. Keep hard intervals, hills and your long run about 48 hours away from a heavy leg session, because tired legs lower the quality of the run and raise the risk of injury. On the same day, lift first and run easy afterwards, or leave 6 hours or more between them.
Why it matters what kind of run
After heavy squats or deadlifts, your legs produce less force and feel heavy for a day or two. Several studies have found running economy can be worse for up to a day or two after a heavy lower-body session. An easy run barely notices that. A hard session does: you hit your target paces less often, and your stride can change as your legs tire, which is when niggles start.
What to run, and when

|---|---|---|---|
| Same day, after lifting | Fine | Avoid | Avoid |

| Two days after | Fine | Fine | Fine |
A simple week that respects this: heavy legs on Monday, an easy run on Tuesday, intervals on Wednesday or Thursday, a lighter leg session on Friday, and the long run on the weekend. Sample hybrid training weeks lays out the full versions.
If you're sore
- Keep the run easy and a bit shorter than planned, on a flat route.
- Expect the first ten minutes to feel stiff. Normal muscle soreness usually eases as you warm up.
- Stop and rest if the pain is sharp, sits in a joint, or gets worse as you go; that isn't normal soreness.
- Soreness fades as your body adapts. Most people feel far less of it after the first two to three weeks of a new routine.
What about running before leg day?
An easy run the day before leg day is fine. A hard interval session or long run the day before will take something out of your squats, so if strength is your priority, keep at least a day between the two. Should you lift or run first? covers same-day order.

Should I run the day after leg day?
An easy run is fine. Save intervals, hills and your long run for about 48 hours after a heavy leg session.
Is running good for recovery after leg day?
An easy run can ease stiffness by getting blood moving, but it isn't required. Rest works too. Keep any run the day after leg day genuinely easy.
Can I do leg day after running?
Yes. After an easy run there's little effect. After a hard run, expect your leg session to suffer a little; if strength matters most, put a day between them or lift first.
